Area covered: Co. Dublin
In an area that has something like 80% takeup of Cable TV, Three Rock doesn't have many direct viewers. Still, bedsit dwellers, cablephobes and the like need TV reception and Three Rock provides it to the Greater Dublin area. Three Rock opened in 1978 and carries RTE One on channel 29, Net 2 on channel 33, tvthree is on channel 35 and oddly enough, TG4 on channel 55. This has meant that Three Rock viewers now need a wideband rather than a Group A aerial as before.
Corkradio suggests that changing the aerial group of Three Rock from group A to group W is to avoid near channel interference in group A, as the NI Divis transmitter occupies channels 21, 24, 27 and 31 already.
I've observed a fair number of Three Rock aerials in North Wales, at least as far as Colwyn Bay, though the signal must be pretty poor by then.
Three Rock is the base station for Ireland's Eurovision links.
On the FM side, Three Rock carries the national radio services, RTÉ Radio 1, 2FM, RnaG and Today FM. Three Rock is also the home of Dublin's commercial radio stations; 98FM, FM104, Spin 103.8, Dublin's Country, Radio na Life, Newstalk 106 and Lite 102.2 FM.
RTE commenced DTTV tests from Three Rock during September 2000. These tests have ceased for the time being, however it is proposed to start a new pilot DTTV service from Three Rock during 2004.
RTÉ are conducting DAB tests from Three Rock and Clermont Carn for the first three months of 2006. At present six stations are being transmitted intermittently; RTÉ Radio 1, 2FM, Lyric FM, Raidio na Gaeltachta, Today FM and WRN Europe.
