Holywell Hill is situated right on the border between Co. Donegal in the Republic and Co. Derry in the North. The transmitter overlooks Derry City. Opened in 1981, Holywell Hill was meant to replace the old 405 line relay stations that carried RTE One to Donegal, but reception has been difficult. The old relays were converted to 625 lines in 1982, however, reception of Holywell Hill is very good in Derry City and County. RTE One is on channel 23, Net 2 is on channel 26, TV3 is on channel 29 and TG4 is on channel 33.
The CTI Londonderry transmitter is on nearby Sheriff's Mountain and carries 6 TV services, BBC1 NI, BBC2 NI, UTV, Ch 4 and Ch 5 as well as Derry's local channel - Channel 9.
