Due to the extremely mountainous terrain of Mullaghanish's service area of counties Cork and Kerry, Mullaghanish has the dubious honour of having the highest amount of relays for an Irish transmitter. Mullaghanish also is unique because it transmitted RTE's first attempt at regional television. In the early 1970's Mullaghanish transmitted the programme 'Munster Matters'after RTE television closed down. The programme was produced in the RTE Dublin studios and all other transmitters were switched off apart from Mullaghanish! The experiment wasn't successful and no other attempts at regional TV were made until a couple of years ago. The Mullaghanish site was one of the five original Telefís Éireann 625 line transmitters, and opened in December 1962.
